Piñatex | Pineapple 🍍
What is it?
Who knew that pineapples could be so eco-friendly?
Piñatex® is an innovative natural textile made from waste pineapple leaf fibre – it is an outstanding sustainable alternative to ecologically damaging leather and petroleum based materials (e.g. PVC).
Pineapple leaves are a by-product of the existing pineapple harvest and are normally burnt. So, not only does the raw material require no extra land, water or pesticides but by not burning the waste significant CO2 emissions are saved.
There's about 13 million tonnes of waste from global pineapple agriculture every year. Using the waste of only the top 10 pineapple growing countries we could theoretically replace over 50% of the global leather production without planting a single pineapple!
- 46% PALF (Pineapple Leaf Fibre)

- Sourced and manufactured in the Philippines, finished in Italy
Why do we use it?
In short, we love how sustainable it is and how good it looks.
Piñatex is one of the most established plant based leather alternatives. We have been working with Piñatex since the founding of Rahui and have always been impressed by its high performance and premium look and feel.
The company behind Piñatex, Ananas Anam, is a certified B Corporation, and has a relentless focus on sustainability and ethics. We love that the material is used from a waste product and that we can trust the company who makes it to do the right thing.
At Rahui we use the premium Piñatex Performance material line. It is lightweight and fully waterproof with high durability and resistance to abrasion. It is finished with a small pebble grain texture that looks and feels like premium leather.
